Mary -- "My American Idol"

Today was the much anticipated day of Regional Auditions for Choir. It wasn't only vocal, there were all sorts of instruments auditioning as well. Mary was very courageous and signed up to sing. You have to sing a solo in front of the judges, as well as go in a room and do sight singing. Mary asked me to be her accompanist. (thank heavens she picked a song I could play) She was asked by several students to play for them as well. Her songs to play were SUPER HARD and I was so glad I didn't have to play them. (well let me just say, I couldn't have played them) I am so proud of her musical ability. She is a great accompanist and has really worked hard to become such. She has a lot of natural ability. While practicing with her, she would give me tips on how to play with more emotion -- something she is particularly good at.

Everyone went into this huge auditorium to warm up. Hundreds of instruments all playing at once, pianos going, people warming up, singing, playing, humming, and just relaxing. I felt like I was waiting for American Idol.

She did a fantastic job on her solo. While I was playing for her, I really wanted to be "the mom" and bust into tears because she was doing such a hard thing, and doing it so well. But, I had to hold it together and be the accompanist. The judge gave her some very positive comments and loved her voice, which made her feel good. I would never get up and sing a solo in front of anyone, let alone in front of a judge, let me hide behind the piano -- and then I really have to think about it! Way to go Mary! I am so proud of you!

Wow! Good for her! It is so amazing to me that our kids are so much braver than we are. So much more confident in who they are and willing to stretch and reach higher heights. Way to go Mary!! I heard about your horrible break in too! CRAZY!
