Truly an Angel

I had the great honor of attending the funeral of sweet Monica Shepard today. I first became acquainted with Monica when her mother and I served in a YW Presidency about 16 years ago. Monica has been confined to a wheelchair her entire life. However, her she did not let this damper her spirits. She always lifted those around her. She could not speak, but did not let that stop her from communicating with everyone. She would always know when you entered a room and would call you to her side to show you her new watch, (I particularly remember the one with the puppy on it.) Monica loved puppies and loved our dog Lacy. Once you met Monica, you were friends for life.

I honor and admire Monica's family -- for they spent their life serving Monica. As a family, anything that they chose to do, had to include Monica. If Monica couldn't participate, they didn't do it. They truly will be blessed for their service. But even more, I feel that they were blessed by having Monica in their lives. We all were.

As I attended her funeral, I am again reminded of the great knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ that I have. The power of the atonement, and the knowledge that this life does not end with death. I look forward to the day when I will pass through the veil and will be met by Monica. Not in her wheelchair, but when we will run into each others arms.
