The music that fills our home...

One day.... when Mary was a mere 4 years old, there was a knock at the front door.  I went and opened the door, and low and behold, it was MARY!!!  She was holding a few piano books she had gathered out of the piano basket, and announced "Hello Sister Tuckett, I am here for my first piano lesson!" (At the time, I was teaching piano everyday in our home)  Playing along, I invited her in, and we sat at the piano for a few minutes which began many years of piano lessons.  Several piano teachers later, and now a wonderful voice teacher, I feel like I have done my job as her mother passing along this skill of the piano by "forcing piano lessons upon her".  She can now out play me by a mile.  While she is not a fabulous concert pianist, she has the skills of a great musician.   You can throw a piece of music in front of her at church, and she will sit down and play it.  She has excellent accompanying skills.  She has developed the love of the piano and the peace and joy it can bring into your life.  There is something about coming home from a hard bad day and sitting at the piano and letting the music soothe the soul.  Music truly does have healing powers.

One night Ray said..."Why is it that when she took lessons, we could never get her to practice, but now we stopped the lessons, we can't get her off the piano?"  She will now sit for hours at the piano, sing, play and just really enjoy this great talent she has acquired.  Just as she has since the day she was born... she fills our house with music and joy.  Whether it be a hymn, a broadway musical,  a pop song from the radio...   she can be found on the piano bench singing and playing... continuing to improve this talent.

And it all started with the small little knock on the front door!

I love that story! The picture of Mary is how I remember her, so tiny!! And I think the practicing of the piano goes the same for everyone, when you don't have to practice, you actually want to :)

How cute! You have done such a good job as parents helping your kids develop their natural gifts! You are going to be a wreck when she goes away to school!

Well just like her mother. How many days did you sit and play and Sing your lungs out in our front room on our old upright. I remember doing the same thing when I was young. With no air conditioning and all windows and doors open all our neighbors had a concert. After I was gone and married they told Grandma Oliver how much they missed that.

That is the Mary Tuckett I remember for sure. She was such a little cutie. How neat that she has found something that both you and her enjoy. As for me, when I turned 18 I quit the piano for good...there was no hope for me - you know that better that anyone else...haha
